From 1945 to 1949, prior to the closing of the border between East and West, 150 000 of the numerous Polish immigrants who settled in the North of France, the so-called “Polacks”, decided to return to their country at the invitation of the new Polish government. Only a few of them actually had Polish citizenship. They returned home to enthusiastically “rebuild the country and help in the edification of socialism”.
